FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The list of revenue cycle management companies partnering with
Passport Health Communications, Inc. continues to grow with the
addition of
Bluemark LLC. The companies have entered a
business partnership agreement to help health care providers increase revenue by
decreasing bad debt and uncompensated care.
Technology and services from Bluemark and Passport drastically reduce or
eliminate the costs associated with health care providers giving care to
patients who cannot pay by determining which patients are eligible for state
Medicaid programs or qualify for charity care or other assistance. Web-based
charity care assessment technology from Bluemark alongside Passport’s
eligibility verification and
self-pay review provides a complete financial
assessment for every patient. Passport’s
address verification,
credit scoring and
credit card processing can also be utilized
before the patient is treated to increase patient payments and eliminate
potential bad debt.
According to
Passport CEO Scott MacKenzie, approximately 10
percent of patients who are treated as self-pay are actually covered by or
qualify for Medicaid. A hospital with an average daily volume of 1,000 patients
and average claim value of $400 can conceivably capture an additional $14.6
million in annual revenue just by screening self-pay patients and identifying
the 10 percent with Medicaid eligibility.
“Bluemark and Passport because of our extensive client relationships understand
the financial implications for health care providers as they treat an estimated
50 million uninsured Americans,” said Ken Sacks, President of Bluemark.
“Together we believe we offer all the tools necessary to cover the gamut of
patients who are visiting hospitals, physician practices and other providers in
today’s economy to ensure the provider captures every available dollar for the
services rendered.”
Technology that helps hospitals and other health care providers accurately
screen patients for Medicaid, charity care and financial assistance programs is
especially valuable in urban metropolitan markets like New York City, where
large numbers of indigent and uninsured patients put extreme financial pressure
on hospitals. Bluemark works with nearly 60 facilities in the New York City
area, as well as with the New York City HRA/MAP (Medicaid Application Program
Unit). Approximately 18 percent of New York residents are uninsured, according
to the Washington-based Employment Policy Institute, and three states –
California, Florida and Texas – make up a third of the nation’s total uninsured
population.
